Perinatal Mental Health Counseling

You are not alone.

We can help you feel well again.

What is Perinatal Mental Health?

Perinatal mental health is the time frame from prenatal through the first year after giving birth. A new baby is a vulnerable time for families. Approximately 1 in 7 birthing parents experience perinatal depression and 1 in 10 new fathers experience perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs).

There is no one cause for the development of a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. Starting life with a new baby is a significant change for a family. Mixed emotions including exhaustion, confusion, worry, overwhelm, fear of not being ‘good enough’ or judged by those around them can all occur. It is a common experience to worry about being labeled as a bad parent. An estimated 80% of new parents experience mood swings in the first 2-3 weeks following a birth and this is a normal adjustment (often referred to as ‘baby blues’). However, symptoms that persist longer than this time frame could indicate a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder.
