Therapy for Teens
While the journey between childhood and adulthood is a joyful experience in many ways, it is usually not without growing pains. Having a trusted therapist to walk along with you on that journey can help adolescent clients discover who they are and find their voice. Therapists at Creative Family Counseling enjoy working with teens as they grow into themselves and consider it to be an honor to help them discover their tools, learn their strengths, and overcome challenges.
Many adolescents overcome challenges such as:
- low self-esteem and self-image
- issues with explosive anger
- panic and anxiety
- drug and alcohol abuse
- self-injurious behaviors
- issues from a history of abuse, trauma, or abandonment
Because many adolescents have an interest in the creative expression of emotions, expressive therapies may be utilized in sessions with them. Therapists may provide activity therapy such as the use of a therapeutic game, art techniques, and additional creative interventions. Lola the Therapy Dog is a big hit with teenage clients, connecting with them in a way only an animal could. She is present most days at Creative Family Counseling to provide animal-assisted therapy with clients. For teens who have experienced traumatic events, therapists at Creative Family Counseling have training in recommended trauma treatment interventions such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Oftentimes, adolescents benefit from shifts in their family system. Like childhood behavioral problems, symptoms from an adolescent family member can signal that the entire family system needs support.
Many services at Creative Family Counseling may benefit families of adolescent clients, such as:
- individual therapy
- family therapy
- parent coaching
- co-parenting support
- group therapy
Therapists take an integrative approach to working with families, considering many domains of family functioning, such as opportunities for connection, healthy stress management skills, maintaining an organizational structure within the home, healthy sleep hygiene and nutritious diets, allowing for physical activity and outdoor time, and having limits on screen time. All treatment plans at Creative Family Counseling are tailored to each client’s specific goals and needs.
